Musical style
Originally from Pakistan, singer-songwriter Arooj Aftab has freed herself from traditions to forge a unique road for herself. A self-taught musician, she learned guitar and developed her vocal style as a teenager listening to artists like Billie Holiday, Mariah Carey and Indian actress and singer Begum Akhtar. After moving to the US to study music, she began to attract attention on the New York City jazz scene. An eclectic artist, Arooj Aftab’s many musical horizons can be heard on her three albums: Bird Under Water (2015), Siren Islands (2018) and Vulture Prince (2021). Her sound universe steps through minimalist spaces that can venture into jazz, and incorporate Sufi poetry. The songs are sung in a soft voice, supported by melodies that are enveloping, haunting and resonate with mysticism; the promise of an ethereal sonorous journey that lingers for a long time.
